Man City Defence begins at Burnley, Chelsea host Liverpool,more...

Champions Manchester City will start the defence of the title in the 2023/2024 Premier League season with Vincent Kompany’s Burnley, handing Pep Guardiola’s Treble-winning team an immediate reunion with their former title-winning captain.

Manchester City, who are celebrating a treble, after winning the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup in 2022-23, are now looking to become the first English team to win four successive titles.

Pep Guardiola's side have won the Premier League in five of the past six seasons.

Burnley manager Kompany spent 11 years at City, winning four league titles.

The 2023-24 Premier League season concludes on Sunday, 19 May 2024.

Chelsea’s new head coach Mauricio Pochettino has also been handed a tough start, hosting Liverpool in a mouthwatering clash of two teams seeking a return to the top four after missing out last season. Jurgen Klopp’s men travel to Stamford Bridge on Sunday 13 August.

Earlier that day, another new manager faces a challenging Premier League debut as Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur make the short trip across London to Brentford, who performed well against the traditional “big six” clubs last season and picked up four points against Spurs.

Opening weekend stats

  • Luton's game at Brighton will be their first in the top flight since a 2-1 loss at Notts County in May 1992. They're the 51st team to play in the Premier League, with two of the last three clubs making their debut in the competition winning their opening match (Huddersfield in 2017, Brentford in 2021).
  • Nottingham Forest go to Arsenal, having defeated them 1-0 in their most recent league meeting in May - they have not won consecutive games against the Gunners since September 1978 under Brian Clough.
  • This is just the second time Chelsea and Liverpool will face one another in their opening game of a Premier League season, with the Blues winning 2-1 at Anfield in 2003-04.
  • No team has won their opening Premier League game more often than Manchester United (20)

Two of the most-improved sides of last season meet in Saturday’s final match. The ambitions of Aston Villa, whom Unai Emery lifted from relegation concern to a seventh-placed finish, will be tested at Newcastle United, who finished in the top four for the first time in 20 years last season.

Before then, AFC Bournemouth will host West Ham United as two teams who escaped the relegation battle late in the season look to start the new campaign on a positive note.
