Shocking! Baby Born In Us Affected With Zika Virus Completely

A New Jersey doctor says a baby born to a Zika-infected Honduran woman has birth defects.

The infant has microcephaly, in which the baby's head is smaller than expected because the brain has not developed properly.

Officials at Hackensack University Medical Center say the 31-year-old mother delivered the girl through a caesarean section on Tuesday.

Dr Abdulla Al Khan, a maternity director at the hospital, says the mother was found to have the Zika virus after coming to the US, where she has family, to seek treatment.

Dr Al Khan said the baby looks "completely Zika-affected".
He said that while confirmation of the virus in the infant is pending testing, he is "90 to 95 percent" sure the baby has Zika.
"What human being isn't going to be devastated by this news?" he added.

According to the Record newspaper, the mother contracted the virus in Zika-ravaged Honduras after being bitten by a mosquito early in her pregnancy.

Earlier this year, a baby born in Hawaii was the first in the US with microcephaly linked to the Zika virus.

Ten countries have reported cases of microcephaly linked to Zika, which is transmitted mainly through mosquito bites but also through sex.

Brazil has the bulk of the cases - more than 1,400.
